It´s hard not to like Gothenburg. Even though it´s the second biggest city in Sweden you still get the small town feeling when you wander the streets of Göteborg, the Swedish name for the city. The people of Gothenburg have a reputation of being very helpful and genuinely friendly.
Not many cities of Gothenburg´s size offer such a complete choice of culture, entertainment, food, sights and events. Gothenburg has established itself as an elite player in the premier division of the event league. A constant stream of trade fair exhibitors, conference delegates, rock stars and sport stars visit the city.
Until the 17th century there was virtually nothing here, and it was only in 1621 that Gustav II Adolf ordered a city to be built. This was the fourth attempt to establish a Swedish “gateway to the west”. The original city was designed by Dutch engineers and architects.
Gothenburg was a truly cosmopolitan city during the 18th and 19th centuries with many British, Dutch and German merchants making the city their home. Gothenburg is still today the principal center of Sweden´s export trade and the country´s premier port.
